The alterations were shared by Google in a November post, alerting users about the impending shift in how WhatsApp backups will contribute to their Google Account’s cloud storage. This change will be gradually implemented, starting with WhatsApp Beta users in December 2023 and expanding to all Android users early next year.

As part of the transition, WhatsApp plans to notify users 30 days in advance through a banner under WhatsApp Settings > Chats > Chat backup. This notification aims to inform users about the forthcoming modifications, emphasizing the shift of WhatsApp backups affecting the Google Account cloud storage limit.

“Our version of the WhatsApp Beta app has now started showing the message, ‘Backups will start using your Google storage in the next few months,’” stated the notification within the Beta version.

While obtaining a Google One subscription stands as an apparent solution for users requiring more storage beyond the 15GB limit, WhatsApp still offers the option to transfer data between Android devices.
